Instructor: Ms. Scheller
Career Guidance and Development at Brookland Cayce High School provides opportunities for students to discover their interests and skills as well as explore the career that is best for him/her based on interest.  Students have access to free on-line programs like Kuder (www.scpathways.org) and SCOIS (www.scois.net) to explore careers, learn how to prepare for a career, research colleges, as well as scholarships and financial aid availabilities.  Students also have an opportunity to participate in job shadowing, virtual job shadowing, career fairs, internships, etc.

Every student at BCHS has an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP).  Starting in 8th grade, students explore a career cluster that is of interest to him/her.  In 9th grade, students choose one of the 16 clusters offered by Lexington School District Two, as well as a major.  IGP/registration conferences will be scheduled starting in January.  A parent/guardian MUST attend this IGP conference so that the parent/guardian and counselor are working with the student to help make the student's future successful.
Class Announcements
Career Development for Juniors:
On September 28, 2010, Juniors will be able to take the ASVAB. The ASVAB is a widely used multiple-aptitude test, an interest inventory, and provides various career planning tools.  Check out the ASVAB website at www.asvabprogram.com for more information.  The ASVAB is provided by the military to our students for free and helps them learn more about themselves and the world of work.  The Education Services Specialists (civilian employees) who administer the ASVAB do not have the authority to recruit.  This program is a great opportunity for Juniors to participate in a career development activity again in high school.
Juniors can also use SCOIS CIS by accessing the
www.scois.net website, clicking on CIS Login, and input the Username "brooklandcayce" and the Password "bearcats".   SCOIS is a valuable tool that allows students and parent/guardian to research colleges, learn about careers (and watch career videos), take practice SAT/ACT tests, build a resume, search scholarship information, learn how to pay for college, and much more information that we use to help students develop their career/educational goals.
Career Development for Sophomores:
Most sophmores used SCOIS their freshmen year.  If they can't remember their username and password, they can see Mrs. Scheller in Guidance. SCOIS is a valuable tool that allows students and parent/guardian to research colleges, learn about careers (and watch career videos), take practice SAT/ACT tests, build a resume, search scholarship information, learn how to pay for college, and much more information that we use to help students develop their career/educational goals.
Tenth graders will be taking the PSAT on October 13, and will be taking the PLAN at a later date.  Both of these assessments will help students prepare for the SAT and ACT plus give valuable career information.

Career Development for Freshmen:
In the Strategies for Success classes, freshmen learn that career development is a 2-step process.  One is "Self-awareness" in which students complete a personality test, skills/interests sheet, and preferences.  Second step is "Career Awareness" in which students complete a career interest inventory using SCOIS  CIS (South Carolina Occupational Information System).  SCOIS CIS is accessible via Internet at www.scois.net and is free to students throughout their high school years.  SCOIS is a valuable tool that allows students and parent/guardian to research colleges, learn about careers (and watch career videos), take practice SAT/ACT tests, build a resume, search scholarship information, learn how to pay for college, and much more information that we use to help students develop their career/educational goals.
